The communication of scientific information is valued in our society. Technical information needs to be made readily available for market promotion.

This course is aimed at those who wish to be published in scientific and refereed journals.

This course covers just about all aspects of scientific and technical writing, and includes a discussion about referees (or reviewers), selecting the right journal, the structure of an article, getting started, interpreting data, breaking the article down into manageable units through the use of headings and sub-headings, the 'why, what and how' of writing such articles, copyright, consideration of the reader, patient's privacy, writers guidelines, abstracts, referencing, and specific contents of papers, such as what to include in the Introduction, Methods, Materials, Results, Discussion and Conclusion.

There is considerable emphasis on the inclusion and preparation and presentation of tables, figures and graphs. Much emphasis is also placed on editing the paper - the words to use and those not to use, sentence structure, paragraph development, and so on. There is also a final checklist that students are recommended to follow before submitting their paper. Advice is given on how to deal with reviewers' concerns, addressing the editor's comments and resubmitting the paper in a revised style.

In addition to the extensive course notes, instruction for the course is based on your tutor working with you as you write your papers. This is very much a one-to-one approach, where supervision and guidance is given at all stages of the writing process.

The course is designed to be completed in about six months, but this time is flexible. As relevant writing is the best means of instruction, the course is designed so that we work with students on current articles or papers they are writing. Students will complete four articles or papers to a publishable or acceptable standard.
